The Westmoreland Yough Trail Chapter is an organized volunteer group whose members are stewards of the 10.5 mile long Westmoreland County section of the Great Allegheny Passage.
Monies are raised with memberships, grants, donations and events. These monies are used for maintenance and improvements of the trail.
The trail is physically maintained by the ‘Over the Hill Gang’ volunteers. They also support fundraising functions.
Other members assist in event planning, organizing, media, web sites, event execution, raffles and a variety of vital support duties. Events include the Run/Walk held in the spring, Trail Appreciation Day in June, Labor Day Poker Run, The Beer Fest with raffle baskets in October and the Bike Raffle.
Our Volunteer Trail Monitors are members who participate in training for qualification. They report trail conditions, clean up trash/hazards and offer help to visitors where necessary.
We are fortunate for our partnerships with the Belle Vernon Rotary Club who erected the Smithton pavilion and the West Newton Rotary who assisted Belle Vernon Rotary to overhaul the railcar located at West Newton Station. The railcar is becoming a unique asset for the community.
Our volunteer group consists of members with diverse talents, that all work as unit for the betterment of our trail section.
Get involved, become a member. Volunteer and participate in events. Your time will be rewarded with fun, friendship and accomplishment.
